Indian Men’s and Women’s Teams Win Silver in Asian Games Chess

The Indian Men’s chess team has clinched the silver medal in the team event at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou! In the final round, India decisively beat the Philippines 3.5-0.5. Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi and Pentala Harikrishna scored wins on boards 2, 3 and 4, while Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa drew against IM Paulo Bersamina on board 1.

This dominating victory sealed the silver medal for India with a final tally of 15/18 match points. Congratulations to all the players and coach GM Srinath Narayanan on this phenomenal result!

Iran won gold convincingly, defeating Korea 4-0 in the last round to finish with 16/18 match points.

In the women’s team event, India also claimed a hard-fought silver medal. Led by Koneru Humpy, the women’s squad displayed grit and skill to earn a podium finish.

Overall, India’s 10-member chess contingent bagged 2 silver medals across the team competitions at Hangzhou 2023. Chess returned to the Asian Games this year after a 13-year absence, having been previously featured in 2006 and 2010.

The 2 silver medals are a great result for Indian chess and demonstrates the growth of talent and competitiveness. While an individual gold eluded India’s players this year, the men’s and women’s team performances show the depth of the country’s rising chess stars. Congratulations to the entire Indian chess contingent on a successful Asian Games campaign!
