The premier American chess events have begun! The 2023 U.S. Chess Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship started on October 5th at the legendary Saint Louis Chess Club. With over $400,000 in prizes, these 11-round tournaments feature the top 24 players in the U.S.
Before the first move was even played, a special Hall of Fame induction ceremony honored new inductees Lisa Lane, William Shinkman, and Yury Shulman for their contributions to American chess. Their legacies continue to inspire today’s champions.
The open section includes 10 players rated over 2700, plus young stars like GM Abhimanyu Mishra. Reigning champion GM Wesley So and perennial contenders like GM Hikaru Nakamura aim to add another title to their decorated resumes.
The women’s event brought together several past champions, including the iconic 8-time winner GM Irina Krush. Fresh challengers like FM Alice Lee also hope to capture the crown.
After day one, GM Sam Sevian and IM Nazi Paikidze seized early leads as the only winners in their sections. Sevian piloted a comeback after early trouble, showcasing the fighting spirit needed to win. Paikidze demonstrated incredible resourcefulness to convert a winning position.
With the strongest American chess fields assembled annually in Saint Louis, fans worldwide follow the rivalries and drama as new champions are crowned.
