India’s dominance continues at the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024 as both the men’s and women’s teams secure their fourth consecutive victories. The men’s team registered a solid 3.5-0.5 win over Serbia, while the women defeated France with the same score.
In the Open section, GM D Gukesh and GM Vidit Gujrathi demonstrated impressive endgame skills, reminiscent of Magnus Carlsen, to defeat GM Alexandr Predke and GM Velimir Ivic respectively.
GM Arjun Erigaisi continued his sharp play to overcome GM Aleksandar Indjic, with GM Pentala Harikrishna taking a well-earned rest.
The women’s team had a similarly strong showing, defeating France 3.5-0.5. GM Harika Dronavalli and IM Tania Sachdev scored comfortable wins, while IM Divya Deshmukh clinched victory in a tense battle against WGM Mitra Hejazipour.
As the Indian teams remain unbeaten, the men now prepare to face Azerbaijan and the women will go head-to-head with Kazakhstan in Round 5.
Biggest Upsets of the Round
- Ukraine stunned the top-seeded USA, winning 2.5-1.5.
- Vietnam delivered the biggest surprise by defeating the defending champions, Uzbekistan, 3-1 without dropping a single game.
- Georgia held England to a 2-2 draw, while Canada beat Greece 2.5-1.5 in the Open section.
- In the Women’s section, Mongolia pulled off a 2.5-1.5 win over Spain, marking one of the notable upsets.
