On February 28, 2025, the Velammal Nexus School in Chennai hosted a grand felicitation ceremony for D Gukesh, celebrating his remarkable achievement as the youngest World Chess Champion. Recognizing his extraordinary contribution to Indian chess, the school awarded him a ₹1 crore cash prize—a testament to his relentless dedication and brilliance on the board.
This isn’t the first time Velammal Nexus has honored Gukesh. After his victory in the Candidates Tournament, the school gifted him a Mercedes-Benz, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing world-class chess talent.

Velammal Nexus has earned the title “The Chess Factory of India” for its unparalleled success in producing elite Grandmasters. Out of India’s 85 Grandmasters, 35 hail from Tamil Nadu, and 21 began their journey at Velammal, including top players like R Praggnanandhaa, R Vaishali, Aravindh Chithambaram, and Adhiban Baskaran.
